In 2003, these two drawings, signed by Tamara and William, had been lying on the floor of the abandoned Cook Primary School for years.

At the suggestion of their teacher, the students had drawn a picture and a text about the Wombat, a small marsupial living in Australia, in places more hospitable than those too arid around Cook.

The wombat is a nocturnal animal that comes out of its burrow at night, hence the leitmotif that recurs in both drawings: They come out at night, like the ghosts of this town deserted by its inhabitants, leaving only two sentinels: Janet and Ivor.

After decades, Tamara, William, their teacher, Janet and Ivor met again at the opening of Middle of Nowhere's first exhibition, entitled They come out at Night step 1 at the Light Square Gallery in Adelaide, South Australia.
